Tamba Hali Earns National Defensive Player of the Week Honors as Penn State Beats Wisconsin 35-14

Tamba Hali is a senior defensive end for the Penn State Nittany Lions who are now ranked 6th nationally in Division I college football. The Nittany Lions (9-1) are having an incredible season and have a good chance to play in a major bowl game. Tamba is a friend of mine from home in Teaneck, New Jersey where he was a high school standout and even though he does not play for Delaware, I like to watch his games and I wanted to celebrate his accomplishments on my blog.

This past Saturday, Penn State played 14th ranked Wisconsin in a game that most probably decided who the Big Ten Conference champions will be. Penn State proved that they are the real deal this season. Tamba played the best game of his collegiate career in his last game at Beaver Stadium, recording a total of 9 tackles including 7 tackles for a loss and 4 sacks. His 4 sacks combined for negative 27 yards and tied the Penn State record for sacks in a game and his 7 tackles for loss broke the school record for TFL. Tamba's great performance earned him the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week Award. In addition to that honor, Tamba is also one of four candidates up for the Cingular/ABC All-America Player of the Week.

So far this season, Tamba has 11 sacks (for -79 yards) which leads the Big Ten and is fifth best in NCAA Division I. He also has a Big Ten leading 16 tackles for loss and has 54 total tackles. Tamba is an All-American candidate as well as a candidate for the Hendricks Award which is awarded to the best defensive end in college football.

I am very proud of Tamba and I hope to be watching him on Sundays next year playing in the NFL. Penn State has a week off this week and then visits Michigan State on November 19th in their last regular season game. I am sure they will also be playing in a bowl game.

Matt,
Not only does it seem like the NFL scouts will be all over Tamba, but every Saturday the TV broadcasters are all over him as well; and with good reason. Penn State is off to an unbelievable season and at this point, they are on track to make an appearance in one of this year's BCS Bowl games. I think it is safe to say that Tamba Hali's play on the defensive side of the ball has a lot to do with PSU's success. As I watched this past Saturday's game against Big Ten rival Wisconsin, I was amazed to see Tamba involved in almost every play. Late in the fourth quarter, he was still running on all cylinders and making great plays. Said to be a very high draft pick in the next NFL Draft, it will be interesting to see where Tamba will end up. Maybe the Eagles will pick him up. Anyway, I think that's awesome that you are friends with him. Next season when he is playing on Sundays instead of Saturdays, you will be able to sit back and watch your friend on TV.

Matt,
Very interesting post. Nice to see you mix it up a little bit now that UD Football is hopeless. Tamba seems like the real deal. It is awesome that you are friends with him. Maybe he will comp you for some NFL games when he gets drafted.
Where do you expect him to be drafted in the NFL? Is he first round material? The Jets are pretty set at Defensive end, however, maybe the eagles would pick him up for when he matures into a great NFL player. Tell him I say hello and that he has a really cool name.
Thanks,
Joe

Penn State finally looks like the dynasty that my parents and family described in past years. They have finally found a way to develop consistent points against premiere teams, while still having a punishing defense. Tamba Hali is a force to be reckoned with. Fortunately I was able to attend the PSU vs Wisconsin game and I was extremely pleased. The crowd was raging with intensity. Tamba's sacks brought an echoing roar to the stadium that sent chills down my back at points. I hope he gets drafted early, I could see him as a Steeler. More importantly, the BCS better not screw PSU out of a good bowl game. Hopefully they will either be in the Fiesta Bowl or the Orange Bowl. WE ARE..,.... PENN STATE!!!

Penn State finally looked like the premiere power house that my parents and relatives have described in years past. They finally have combined the ability to put up big points agains top teams like Michigan and Wisconsin, while still delivering a punishing defense that can hold teams to very minimal points.
I'm very happy for Tamba Hali and his success on the defense. I hope he gets drafted a little later so that he has a chance on being a Steeler, he would fit great on that defense with Joey Porter.
I was fortunate enough to be at the PSU vs Wisconsin game and I must say it was the most exhilerating sporting event I've ever been to. The crowd of 109,000 erupted when Tamba had a sack so loud that it sent chills down my spine.
I really hope that PSU continues its success and gets to play in a good bowl game. Hopefully the BCS doesn't screw us and we willl either be in the Fiesta Bowl or the Orange Bowl.
WE ARE...... PENN STATE!!!
